[handwritten] 3rd April 78

Dear Mis Turner-Wilcox.

Last year if you remember I was very late in paying my annual subscription.

It falls due on June 30th. Would you be so kind as to accept my subscription for the next term. I don't want to forget again.

Yours sincerely

John H. Nicholson

Notes

Alan Cole
John Hobson Nicholson (1911-88) was a painter working mostly on the Isle of Man.

The subscription referred to is for the 'Turner Society', whose aim was to get the terms of the will of the artist J. M. W. Turner met as he intended.
I was a founder member and first vice-chairman then temporary chairman of the society, which had a lot of influence with the Thatcher government at the time. It did not quite achieve its ambitions due to Sir Charles Clore funding the Clore Gallery at the Tate, and the trustees reading the terms of Turner's will in what the Society considered the wrong way.
