Quill pen with feathers removed, bound in red thread through which has been threaded coral shells. The red thread terminates in a tassle. A double chain of coral shells on white thread is attached to the quill at the top and base.

Early 19thC. The added decorative beads spell out the words 'I love you'. Such quills were given usually by men to their lady-loves, but occasionally it was the other way around.
