[top right, printed in black] HER ROYAL HIGHNESS THE PRINCESS OF WALES AND
MISS EDITH SANDFORD.

Miss EDITH SANDFORD received from H.R.H. THE PRINCESS OF WALES a most kind letter enclosing a very handsome present, and expressing her Royal Highness's regret on hearing of the fearful accident Miss Sandford had met with in Dublin, August, 1871. Miss Sandford received a similar gratifying compliment from EARL SPENCER, Lord Lieutentant of Ireland, and in his letter his Lordship said "he sincerely hoped the Irish people would not be long deprived of Mis Sanford's valuable services."

Dear Sir

Mr Rogerson is very poorly obliged and keeps his room today with cold and sore throat, and in case you have a rehearsal tomorrow he writes to say he could not come, but if

[overleaf] you will let him know time of rehearsal Tuesday and if the theatre opens that evening he will be much obliged.

With regards

Edith Sandford

Notes

Alan Cole
Edith Sandford was an 'authoress, actress, and equestrienne' who dramatised (and partly re-wrote) Ouida's _Under Two Flags_ as the theatrical event 'Firefly'. As one newspaper reported in 1869: 'The drama itself, replete with interest and startling situations, terminates with a "great fire scene," in the construction of which no less than three tons of platforms and scenery are employed, which Miss Sandford brings with her.'
