Notes

Alan Cole
Said to be a common pilgrim's relic from Constantinople, purporting to be made by mixing small fibre fragments of the true cross with mud or wax. Based on the story that St. Helena, mother of Constantine, excavated the cross from an area just outside Jerusalem. She divided the cross into nine sections and distributed them. Legend has it that a portion of it was used in producing these relics. Probably made in the 5th century AD.
