Roman seal box with red enamel. decoration. A cord would have been wound round a roll of papyrus and passed through the notches in the side of the box. A blob of molten wax would have then been dropped onto the cords in the box and a seal impressed into it. The box would then have been closed. This would make it easy to see if the seal had been tampered with.
